A lost paper marriage certificate can often be replaced through the Department of Home Affairs. Check which official version you need before starting.

You can request another registered South African marriage certificate from DHA. Confirm whether the recipient needs an abridged, unabridged or vault copy before applying.
Quick answer: If you have lost your South African marriage certificate, you can apply to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for another certificate, provided your marriage was registered in South Africa. First establish whether the receiving organisation requires an abridged, unabridged (full) certificate or a vault copy of the marriage register.
Certificate Assistance is an independent private document-assistance service, not DHA or any South African government agency. Only Home Affairs can issue an official replacement marriage certificate.
Yes. A lost physical certificate does not necessarily mean the marriage record itself has disappeared. The South African government confirms that people married and registered in South Africa may apply to DHA for another marriage certificate. The process is different where the marriage was never registered correctly or the register details need verification.
For the distinctions, read Abridged vs Unabridged Marriage Certificates and the guide to the full marriage certificate.
Prepare the names of both spouses (including former or maiden names where relevant), identity or passport numbers, the marriage date and place, and any available registration details. Your existing handwritten marriage certificate, even if it is not the final document needed abroad, may help DHA locate the record.
Home Affairs uses the BI-130 application form for marriage certificates. The current accepting office may request identification, relationship or authorisation proof and payment of the prescribed fee. Confirm its requirements before applying.
Contact the South African embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your location about the latest consular application procedures. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation explains that birth and marriage certificate applications filed through diplomatic missions should be followed up with the mission that accepted them. Overseas submission and return-delivery arrangements may take longer than a domestic application.
See DIRCO's Consular Services information.
If DHA cannot locate the record or the details do not match, ask DHA how to verify the original registration. Collect the date and place of the ceremony, the marriage officer's details where known, and any photographs or copies of the certificate. Only DHA or an authorised legal process can correct or establish the official register; an intermediary cannot change a register entry.
Not always. Ask the institution overseas what legalisation it requires. DIRCO says that a marriage certificate issued by the marriage officer at the wedding cannot be directly legalised through its standard route: an original Home Affairs-issued unabridged marriage certificate is required. DIRCO does not accept an ordinary certified photocopy in place of the original for direct legalisation.
See our DIRCO Apostille Process Guide, and confirm requirements on the official DIRCO Legalisation Services page.
Certificate Assistance can help explain the correct South African document, required application details and appropriate private facilitation arrangements. Our fees, where a service is available, are separate from the official DHA charge. We cannot guarantee Home Affairs processing times or issue certificates ourselves.
Not necessarily. Foreign authorities often specify an unabridged certificate issued by Home Affairs.
No. DHA's BI-130 form treats them as different choices.
No. Obtain the appropriate official certificate first and confirm what, if any, legalisation is required.

Yes, if the marriage was registered in South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs can issue another official certificate subject to its requirements.
No. BI-130 distinguishes an abridged certificate, unabridged certificate and a certified copy of the original register (vault copy).
Only if the receiving overseas authority requires legalisation. DIRCO generally needs an original DHA-issued unabridged certificate for this process.
